We thought it might be easier if we all responded to the book during the same week. We are set to read For a Better World: Reading and Writing for Social Action by Randy and Katherine Bomer. The best time to respond would be between Fri. October 28th through Fri. Nov. 4th. This way we know when to check the blog for others comments and reflections. For those in Language and Literacy doctoral seminar, we plan to do this monthly and respond during the week of seminar–an easy way to track the date.
Anyone is welcome to join…even if you’re not focused in language and literacy, but are interested in reading some of the professors in this field at UT.

Great thinking. I’ve started the book. I think reading these books and articles will help us to understand our professors more and to see what their theoretical perspectives are.
I think so, too. Often readers don’t “hear” the voice of the speaker/writer and since we know these people, that will be stronger. Also, we can ask the questions that we always have about what we read; “what did you mean by …”
I have always liked Randy’s writing. While he addresses some theoretical ideas that I sometimes have to research, I always hear him when I read his work. Voice is an area that teachers struggle to teach. It’s hard, and the current testing regime makes instruction that facilitates learning voice very difficult. Kids get so many guidelines/rules about writing that even when they get good info, they can’t sort it out from the piles that they bring with them.
I always wonder about teaching voice, too. How do we teach voice, when everyone has their own?
